As many residents and patrons know, the Park District of Franklin Park has five rooftop beehives on the Centre at North Park. This effort is part of Project Aurelius, the Park District’s team to help increase pollinator protection. Last year we harvested 30 pounds of honey in our first season. Our now established hives produced over 300 pounds of honey this summer.
What is the Park District going to do with all the honey? With help from our After School Program and Park District Staff, we filled up jars of honey. The honey will be used for giveaways at different Park District events. We also have different honey jar sizes that are available for purchase at the Community Center front desk. Jars are available while supplies last until next year’s honey harvest. A 6 oz jar sells for $6, a 10 oz jar for $10 and 15 oz for $15.
All proceeds go toward the Parks Foundation of Franklin Park. The Parks Foundation provides financial assistance for recreational opportunities for in-district residents dealing with financial hardship. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to play and learn here.
