Sustainability Initiatives

As stewards of our community and environment, we are committed to implementing innovative sustainability practices that promote ecological health and responsible resource management. Our district has embraced a holistic approach to sustainability, integrating eco-friendly initiatives across all facilities and parks. From enhancing recycling efforts and improving energy efficiency to fostering community engagement, we strive to create a greener future for all.

Recycling and Waste Management

  • Recycling bins throughout the parks.
  • Recycling available at all district facilities, including electronic recycling.
  • Used playground equipment is recycled.
  • Reuse of the Village’s mulch in planting beds.

 

Energy Efficiency

  • Updated lighting to LED at the Community Center, North Park, and Ice Arena.
  • Installed “Big Ass Fans” in various facilities to improve air circulation.
  • White reflective roofs at key locations to maintain cooler interiors.

 

Innovative Landscaping

  • Established rain gardens at the Community Center and Ice Arena.
  • Hand-pulling weeds instead of using herbicides.
  • Trees removed are repurposed for firewood or play equipment.

 

Sustainable Materials and Practices

  • Use of permeable pavers at the Community Center and Ice Arena.
  • Installation of a bioswale at the Ice Arena.
  • Floor under the Ice Arena fireplace is recycled from the old ice arena floor.

 

Heating and Cooling Efficiency

  • Utilizing waste heat reclaim from compressors to heat the Zamboni pit and melt snow.
  • Low E ceiling at the Ice Arena reflects heat for efficiency.
  • Ice Arena fireplace heats the lobby.

 

Digital Transition

  • Reducing printing by communicating via email across the District.
  • Monthly board meeting books are mostly digital.
  • Staff uses iPads instead of paper.

 

Water Conservation and Quality

  • Water bottle fillers installed at all facilities.
  • The Service Center uses a PUR filter container for drinkable water.

 

Community Engagement and Resourcefulness

  • Mindfulness in craft materials usage, with public donation requests.
  • Overwintering plants and collecting seeds for replanting.
  • Reusing lost and found beach towels as cleaning rags.
